In addition to a demanding professional career, Richard has served the IoD with distinction since the 1980s, initially as Regional Secretary and then as West Midlands Regional Chairman from 1994-1997. He is just completing an extraordinary second three-year term as Chairman, which he took up again at the IoD’s request in 2007.
From 1994 until 2007, he was also on the National Council of the IoD and served on the Audit & Risk Committee for much of this time. During his periods of office, it is generally acknowledged that Richard has made an exceptional and sustained contribution to IoD activities and to the wider business community.
Richard has been a first rate Ambassador for Business in the broader community and with Government, AWM and key regional organisations. He has used his position to lobby for the business community and to promote the values behind good business.
These have been challenging times of late and Richard has worked hard to make a real difference by developing programmes to help support members adapt to the dramatic changes in the economy.
Importantly, Richard has been a long-term and committed advocate of assisting younger people and instituted schemes for experienced members to mentor both younger members and those in Education looking to careers in Business. He is an enthusiastic supporter and sponsor of the Young Directors Group.
Together with partners at AWM, the regional universities, and JobCentre Plus, the IoD has helped the Graduate Internship programme take in excess of 400 graduates off the unemployment register, whilst providing valuable business experience. Throughout his involvement, Richard has been keen to work with other business organisations and as such been an active contributor in the creation of a unified front for Business. He has worked extensively with others towards the creation of Business Voice West Midlands (formerly West Midlands Business Council), which now represents the collective views from a range of business groupings.
As a BVWM Board member, he has been particularly active and visible in helping take the key issues to policy makers and raising the concerns of business on a whole range of issues, including the structure of Regional Government and the role of RDA.
He has worked to establish close relationships between the IoD and organisations seeking to assist armed service personnel. Despite challenging times, Richard has made important changes in the IoD and leaves it with clear succession, a strong regional committee, active branches and with finances in good order.
Charitable work
For a number of years now, Richard has been an active Trustee, supporter and sponsor of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment Museum in Warwick, which promotes the contribution of those who served in our ‘local’ regiment and is a facility to help educate school children and the wider community in the contribution of the military to modern society.
